Eight O'Clock Coffee at it Again!

While digging up dirt on Eight O'Clock Coffee, I came across a Good Earth Tea & Coffee (owners of Eight O'Clock) giveaway that I thought would be of interest to you and your neighbors.

In honor of Earth Day, Good Earth is hosting their first-ever Good Earth Giveaway offering consumers the chance to take home $10,000 in cash and donate $10,000 to the charity of their choice.

That kind of money could buy me a whole latte java.

McCafe isn't mcbad. More than 7,000 — or a little more than half — of U.S. stores now sell the espresso-based drinks, and the chain expects to meet its mid-2009 deadline.

Home Brewing Gets Hopped Up

The economic slump gives at home coffee a bump.

According to the NCA, daily coffee consumption in the US remains steady, while the number of people making their coffee at home is up!

This year, 3,000 adults were polled and of the people who said they had drunk coffee the previous day, 83 percent said they had made it at home -- up 5 points compared to last year.

Daily consumption of gourmet coffee, fell to 14 percent, back to levels seen in 2007. In 2008, this category was at 17 percent.

Lie Detector Test for your Coffee

You ask you server for a decaf post dinner. But he seems suspicious and you don't trust him. What to do?? Whip out your D+Caf Test Strips! Not sure why anyone would find these necessary but thought they'd be a good mention for an end of week post.

Popular Mechanics put these strips to the test and found them faulty. Besides not be able to test beverages once cream or sugar's been added (including sodas and my morning cup) the strips were noted as being difficult to read.

I don't recommend using these to prove your waiter wrong.

That's a Latte Beer

Beer for breakfast? Not exactly. But for some, coffee and beer are a match made in heaven.

Glarus Brewing Co. recently introduced a coffee flavored beer called Beer Stout, after the "Coffee Flavored Beer" category took off at the 2008 Brewers Association World Beer Cup.

The coffee infused into New Glarus' Coffee Stout is a cold-pressed organic coffee. Cold pressing is a process of brewing coffee that takes several hours, as opposed to the few minutes it takes to brew with hot water.

Two cheers to that!

And retailers have been selling coffee makers faster than they can ship them, with sales of coffee makers and accessories rising almost 5% from last year.

Coffee to Fuel the Fire

Coffee may light my fire but it's different for those putting out the flames. According to The Vancouver Sun, coffee and firefighting are a bad blend.

Researchers have found that caffeine could distort firefighters' judgment, raise their core body temperature and increase their oxygen intake in a firefighting environment. The study also found that firefighters used up about 10% more air from their tanks when they were on caffeine versus the placebo. That translates to losing almost five minutes in a 30-minute period.

Coffee's just too hot to handle for some.

Not a Drop of Controversy in this Cup

OK - I know it's Friday and I'm "suppose" to be taking a break from the java. HOWEVER, when a coffee article in the New York Times is the MOST emailed article of the day, I can't ignore it!

In the article, the following caffeine myths get sorted out:

Hydration - Drinks containing usual doses of caffeine are hydrating and, like water, contribute to the body’s daily water needs.

Heart disease - Studies show no increase in heart disease among daily coffee drinkers, whether their coffee came with caffeine or not.

Hypertension - Studies found that coffee drinking played little overall role in the development of hypertension.

Cancer - Scientists found coffee drinking had little if any effect on the risk of developing pancreatic or kidney cancer. And a study of women found no connection between coffee, tea or caffeine consumption and breast cancer.

Bone loss - Caffeine’s negative effect on calcium can be offset by as little as one or two tablespoons of milk.

Weight loss - No long-term benefit to weight control has been demonstrated - DAMN!

Health benefits - The most important effects of caffeine are its ability to enhance mood and mental and physical performance.

TGIF! But I just might tip-toe into the kitchen and pour myself my favorite treat...shhhh.

Full Throttle Hydration is a new noncarbonated energy drink with electrolytes and "special" vitamins. Its now available in 16-ounce aluminum cans throughout the Southeast.

The super secret herbal drink is based on traditional Chinese herbal cures, with the help of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. This project could be as important to the company's future as the original formula was to its past.

Diet Coke is getting a makeover just in time for women’s fashion week in Milan at the end of September. Roberto Cavalli decked out the tiny bottles in animal spots and stripes. The limited edition bottles will be available in Italy from September through December.
